Timely Tips March: twelfth week.

  • At this point in year it would be true to say that you can sow near enough everything apart from brassica’s and radicchio’s which are sown later on in the year. I will not give a list other then to say do not grow any thing that you are not going to eat and use. If you are pushed for time in the growing year; just go for leeks and potatoes which need very little care once they are going.

  • However, the above said, I do give word of waning;just because we had a warm week end does not mean that it is time to rush out and sow,sow sow. Here in the UK it looks like that we may get a bit of snow in the coming days. Not a good time to sow tomatoes! So wait and see is my advise.
  • At this time of year ‘big-buds’ on your black currant bushes are so prominent as to be easily noticeable. Pick them off and burn them. Although this is not an entirely effective method of control there can be no question that question that systematic removal of this kind does much to prevent the pest from spreading.
  • Once again,I do push the fact that there is nothing like a cold frame for moving things along. Having one does protect your crops from weather that is hot one day and snow the next.
